HGV Class 1 Category C+E Driver Training Courses

HGV LGV Class 1 is now known and recognised in the UK haulage industry as Category C+E.

A Class 1 or Category C+E Driving Licence will enable you to drive an Articulated Lorry which is commonly known in the UK as an Artic.

An Articulated Lorry has a separate cab called a tractor unit and trailer joined by a semi-permanent pivot joint known as a kingpin.

The kingpin allows the artic to turn more sharply.

A Category C+E licence allows the holder to drive a vehicle that weighs over 3500Kg along with a trailer that weighs over 750Kg.

An artic has a maximum permitted gross weight of 44000Kg or 97000lb but must have three axles on both the tractor and trailer as government requirement to help reduce damage to our roads.

A six axle artic is known in the industry as a 6 wheeler or 6 legger.

Overloading the authorised gross weight of an artic is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Although trailer dimensions vary depending on the amount and type of load, most UK trailers are 13.5M long or 45 feet.

You will see many types of articulated lorries on the UK roads, the most common are box trucks that transport non-perishable supermarket goods. Perishable food is transported in Reefer trucks which are insulated or refrigerated. Other types of artics are flat beds which carry construction plant or materials and car haulers which transport motor vehicles.

In order to obtain your Class 1 or Category C+E driving licence you must first pass your Class 2 or Category C driving test. At Truck Training UK you can do back to back courses and tests with your Cat C first and your Cat C+E a week later.
